Planning Your First Wedding Dance

So, MC Hammer or "I Will Always Love Youuuu"?On second thoughts, perhaps neither!

Choosing the song for your first dance can be so tricky, especially if you and your partner have different music tastes. Do you want a smoochy slow number so that all you have to do is cuddle and sway, or are you more the type who wants to choreograph a show-stopping extravaganza that will wow your guests?

Whatever you choose, keep these points in mind:

Your first dance is such a memorable moment - it can be as poignant or soppy or silly as you like - choose something that suits your personalities and sums you up as a couple.

You don't actually have to dance! It's a nice opportunity to just have a few minutes together and do nothing more than whisper sweet nothings into each other's ear...

Don't push yourself! Bear in mind yourwedding dress, your heels, the exhaustion of an adrenaline-filled day, a full stomach after dinner and quite possibly a few drinks too! Attempting a complicated dance, high kick or the splits could have you ending up on YouTube - or worse, A&E!

Have fun. Even if you can't dance, enjoy yourself - this is your day, everybody at your wedding is happy for you and wants to see you happy - they won't mind at all if you dance like your dad.

If you're really embarrassed then get some company - arrange for your bridesmaids and groomsmen to join you after a minute or so, and you won't feel so on display.

Consider some professional dancing classes as a couple if you want a more traditional first dance - it'll only take a few to give you the right idea, and can be a fun way to spend time as a couple before the wedding.

Don't choose a song that's too long. You don't want to be stuck for groovy moves half way through a 12 minute number...

Plan your dance's beginning and end - even if they're as simple as giving each other a kiss - there's nothing worse than awkward half-dancing while you wait for the music to stop!

Practice with your partner before the day so you're in synch at the very least - but don't worry too much about planning a routine if you don't want to. Enjoy yourselves!
