When a daughter gets married, the father can be a real sufferer, especially when it is time to give the father of the bride wedding speech. After all, daddy's little girl is going away with some guy dad barely knows. His little girl may know the guy and trust him, but what can dad know? How's a dad to know what kind of guy his new son-in-law is? Trust the girl, that's how.Dad should not put himself in his daughter's shoes for this one. He can't imagine what it is like for a young woman, so trying to sell that to the wedding guests is not wise. The speech should be about her, and it should be about love, but not too maudlin. It's better to talk about her life before her new husband and dad's dreams for her. It's better to articulate his belief in her and her ability to bring those dreams about. That reflects well on the son-in-law, because after all, she chose him. When dreaming, make sure it's not about the nightmares. What parent doesn't worry about their child? Don't men tion the worries; this is a celebration.As the speech comes to an end, invite the wedding guests to join in commemorating a happy union. Don't ask them to drop in unannounced to check on her. Don't encourage them to share all the stories about the groom's former girl friends. Don't try to be a comedian. The bride will be happier with a conventional wish for her good marriage, than with an attempt at humor that goes sour. Hearing the crickets chirping just outside the hall is probably not a goal for the father of the bride wedding speech either. Dad should say from his heart what every bride wants to hear: how proud he is of his daughter, and how beautiful she is on her special day.
